Sunderland doesn’t always get the credit it deserves as a wedding city, and I think that’s a shame, because the combination of City Hall for the ceremony and Roker beach for portraits is one of my favourite pairings in the North East. You get the polish of a proper civic building and the wild, open beauty of the coast, all within a few minutes of each other.
Sunderland City Hall is a genuinely striking modern building. The clean lines and big windows mean it’s full of soft, even light, exactly what you want for a ceremony and the group shots straight after. It photographs beautifully without feeling stuffy, and the central location makes life easy for guests travelling in.
Then there’s Roker. A five-minute drive takes you from the steps of City Hall to the seafront, the pier and that distinctive red-and-white lighthouse. Late afternoon is the sweet spot: the sun drops behind the town and throws gorgeous warm light back off the sea, so your portraits glow rather than squint. The wide beach gives us room to breathe and the horizon does half the work for me.
A few practical notes from doing this often. Build in fifteen minutes of travel time between the two and keep a comfy pair of shoes in the car for the sand. Roker can be breezy, so a partner who’ll hold a veil down between frames is worth their weight in gold. And don’t fear a bit of cloud, flat North Sea light is wonderfully kind to skin.
